Udupi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) along with the Hindu outfits held a protest on June 6, against the arrest of Bajrang Dal and VHP activists in the cattle trader Hussainabba’s death case. The BJP also demanded to handover the case to the CBI.

They criticised the actions of the police for arresting the activists for murder even before the forensic reports were available and alleged that Chief Minister Kumaraswamy had put undue “pressure” on the police to register a murder case without any concrete evidence.

Shobha Karandlaje accused the government of focusing only on the death of Hussainabba when people of the coastal region were suffering due to the rains and floods. “Even though Karnataka is yet to get a full-fledged government, the chief minister personally called IGP and SP seeking a report on the case”, she alleged.

More than 1,000 members of the BJP, Bajrang Dal and the VHP had gathered in front of the DC office in Manipal to participate in the protests led by Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP Shobha Karandlaje. The police had arranged a tight security at the site with 500 police personnel deployed for preventing any untoward incident during the protest.

Shobha also accused the Congress government of Siddaramaiah of appeasing the minorities. “Siddaramaiah’s initiatives like ‘Shaadi Bhagya’ were only for Muslims and not Hindus”, she claimed. In a reference to the death of Kabeer in 2014, she said that when a cattle trafficker was killed his family received Rs 10 lakh compensation from the government but families of the activists killed trying to prevent illegal cattle trade and trafficking got no compensation.

Shobha also denied the involvement of the VHP and Bajrang Dal in the death. “There is no connection between Bajrang Dal and the incident at Perdoor. Bajrang Dal, RSS and VHP had announced not to engage in unlawful activities long ago”, she claimed. All that Bajrang Dal activists did was to pass on the information about the illegal cattle transportation to the police, she maintained. Shobha also refuted the contention of the police that the Bajrang Dal activists damaged the vehicle of Hussainabba and said that the vehicle was damaged by Hussainabba and his companions themselves as they tried to reverse in a bid to escape.

In a controversial remark, Shobha also claimed that Muslim farmers themselves did not support cow slaughter. Calling the former Karnataka Governor Bharadwaj as a “UPA chela,” she alleged that the former governor of Karnataka Bharadwaj did not sign the anti-cow slaughter law as he was the “chela of the UPA” government at the Centre.

She also demanded the transfers of police officials for not performing their duty faithfully. However, she further insisted that the agitation was not against the police. While congratulating the police for acting on information passed by the Hindu outfits, she claimed that she supported lawful actions of the police. “This protest is against the state government”, she added.

She also implored the police not to discriminate on the basis of religion and to work in constitutionally appropriate ways. “Use the lathi and pistol you have on the illegal cow traffickers and not on cow protectors. None of our activists hold lathi and pistol in their hands. We have come here wearing a saffron shawl and nothing else”, she said.

MLA Raghupati Bhat, BJP District President Mattaru Ratnakar Hegde among others leaders also spoke on the occasion.
