Udupi: The Udupi Zilla Panchayat has decided to lodge criminal cases against the NHAI engineers as well as the contractors for the unscientific National Highways, which have been claiming innocent lives over the last several years.
A resolution in this regard was passed by the Zilla Panchayat, on Tuesday, June 25. The members of the ZP said that the entire stretch of National Highway has been laid unscientifically, paying very little attention to safety issues. While the NH is laid, the authorities have still not finished work on the service roads in places like Katapady and Padubidri, which is causing several accidents.
When Shashikanth Padubidri, a ZP member said that like Sasthan toll gate, concession needs to be given even at Hejamady toll gate for local vehicles, the NHAI officials said that since the NH work has been completed in the jurisdiction of Sasthan toll gate, the vehicle owners living in five km area around the toll gate are being given concession. Similarly, when the workaround Hejamady toll gate gets over, a concession pass will be given to locals as well.
K Dinakar Babu ZP President presided over the meeting. Sheela K Shetty Vice president, Halady Srinivas Shetty MLA, K Raghupathy Bhat MLA, Sindhu Rupesh CEO, Srinivas Rao chief officer, Nagesh Raiker and others were present.
