Udupi: Udupi Deputy Commissioner Priyanka Mary Francis and Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil conducted a joint inspection of the land that has been identified for the construction of a port at Hejamadi. The new port will potentially reduce the pressure on the Malpe and Mangaluru ports.
After the inspection and discussion with the fisherfolk leaders and officials of the Fisheries Department, the Udupi DC told reporters that the work on the breakwater would begin first.
DC Sasikanth Senthil informed reporters of the objection raised by the fisherfolk of the DK district. They have objected to the breakwater at Hejamady, as it would cause coastal erosion at Sasihithlu, he said and added that the experts should consider the coastal erosion factor while constructing the breakwater.
Mulki Purse Seine and Trawl Boat Fishermen Association General Secretary, Vijaya S Bangera then expressed his happiness over finally receiving a port in Hejamady after 50 years of struggle.
