Education is important for empowerment of society: Dr Jayamala

Udupi: Women and Child Development and District in-charge Minister Dr Jayamala, inspired by Narayana Guru said on Sunday, February 3 that education is important in the empowerment of society.

The minister was speaking at the inaugural function of the mega convention of the Billava Community organized by the Udupi District Billava Yuva Vedike, at Gandhi Maidan, Brahmavar.

She promised the gathering that she would present the Billava community’s demands to Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy, who could not attend the function as he was busy with the budget preparations. Praveen M Poojary, along with other leaders of the Billava community, handed over a memorandum to the minister to pass on to the CM. The demands include a request to change the Billava community from Category 2 to Category 1 in the OBC list, establish a Billava community board and the empowerment of Garodi workers.

Kota Srinivasa Poojary, B K Hariprasad and Dr Jayamala were felicitated on the occasion.

Mumbai based Shiva Poojary emphasized the need to empower the Billava Community and also gave a brief insight into the historical and current situation of the community in various fields.

Earlier, Sadguru Sri Sri Brahmananda Saraswathi Swamiji, Sri Ram Kshetra Mahasamsathana, Kannadi, Dharmasthala, Sadguru Sri Sri Vikyathanand Swamiji, Hosmaru, Sri Gurudevashrama, Bollottu, Karkala blessed the occasion.

The convention was attended by a large number of people. Brahmavar wore a festive look during the convention as the streets and bridges were decorated and huge banners were displayed.

Brahmavar Billava Seva Kendra president B N Shankar Poojary presided over the function.

Suresh Karkada kicked off the event with a prayer and Billava leader Achyuth Kalmady gave the keynote address. Vishu Kalmady proposed a vote of thanks.

Shobha Karandlaje, Raghupathy Bhat, Sunil Kumar Karkala, Sukumar Shetty Byndoor, Umanand Kotian Moodubidri, Gopala Poojary, Vinay Kumar Sorake, Madhu Bangarappa, B Basavaraj, Suresh Poojary, N T Poojary, Naveen Chandra D Suvarna and others were present.
