Udupi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will hold a state-wide protest on November 9 on the eve of Tipu Jayanti celebration in the state, at 4 PM near the district BJP office, Kadiyali.

Speaking to media persons during a press conference held at the district BJP office, Mattar Rathnakar Hegde, President of the BJP district unit, said that celebrating Tipu Jayanti was against the Hindus. He stated that Tipu had not contributed anything to the state of Karnataka.

He accused Tipu of being a religious bigot who massacred many people and forced them to embrace Islam. “The government’s move of observing Tipu Jayanti is an act of Muslim appeasement. Large scale communal violence erupted during the Tipu Jayanti celebrations in 2015, when it was first organised by the government. Tipu Sultan was a terrorist and persecuted Kodavas and Catholics in Mangaluru. Even in Mallar of Kaup, there was a large number of Hindus and Christians who converted to Islam,” he said.

BJP leaders Kulaidy Suresh Nayak, Prabhakar Poojary, Yashpal Suvarna and Shivakumar Ambalpady were present during the press meet.

Meanwhile, the Sangh Parivar outfits are also protesting statewide against the celebration of Tipu Jayanthi on November 10, said Bajrang Dal’s Karnataka South Regional convener Sunil K R.

Addressing the media at a press meet held at the Udupi Press Club on Wednesday, November 7, Sunil said that the decision to celebrate the birth anniversary of Tipu Sultan by the then chief minister Siddaramaiah was an insult to the people of the state.

The Sangh Parivar leaders have said that the protest was being held as an issue related to nationalism. They are yet to finalise the form and venue of the protest.

District Convener of Bajrang Dal Dinesh Mendon, District President of Hindu Jagarana Vedike Pramod Shetty Mandarti, District Secretary of Vishwa Hindu Parishat Prakash Kukkehalli, District General Secretary of Hindu Jagarana Vedike Shankar Kota and others were present.
