District administration to set up two disabled-friendly booths in Udupi

Udupi: Two polling booths with special facilities will be set up for people with disabilities by the district administration in Udupi. According to Deputy Commissioner (DC) Hephsiba Rani Korlapati, these booths will be set up at Kodi Kanyana and Hanumantha Nagara and will be manned by physically challenged staff.

Electricity connection, a fan, disabled-friendly toilet, drinking water facility, ramp and wheelchairs will be made available at these booths. Apart from this, volunteers will be available to help the physically challenged voters and vehicles have also been arranged to transport them. For the hearing impaired, a teacher has also been deployed to assist them through sign language.

The DC also informed that first aid centres with an assistant are being arranged for emergency treatment. Chairs and floor mats are also being placed at the polling booths for voters to sit while they wait.

As many as 143 wheelchairs and 222 magnifying glasses will be made available for the 1,640 physically challenged that have been identified in the Kundapur Assembly segment. As many as 222 volunteers will also be deployed for assistance.

The Udupi constituency has 1,516 physically challenged for whom 115 wheelchairs and 226 magnifying glasses have been arranged, along with 226 assistants.

There are 1,299 physically challenged in the Kaup Assembly segment where 117 wheelchairs and 208 magnifying glasses are being arranged. As many as 208 volunteers will also be deployed.

In the Karkala Assembly segment, the authorities have arranged for 149 wheelchairs and 209 magnifying glasses along with 209 assistants for the has 1,439 physically challenged voters.
