Development projects risking lives in Karkala

Karkala : It has been alleged that the authorities have turned a blind eye to the dangers posed to the citizens  due to the works undertaken under Nagarottana and AFC Scheme in the TMC limits.

The  state government had allocated Rs 5 crores for the Project in the TMC limits two years ago. However the project was implemented just last week owing to the enforcement of election code of conduct.

It is now said that the unscientific works undertaken using the Rs 40 lakh grant  under AFC scheme has  converted the Banglegudda Junction-Anchekatte road into a dangerous zone. The tender process and the works were done under the supervision of the Deputy commissioner who is the  head of the  Committee which also includes the District Urban Development Engineer. The contracting agency for Nagarottana project is KBR Infotech Bangalore, while the PMC Agency of Bangalore was given the responsibility of checking quality of the works.

The AFC scheme works were done by Nirmithi Kendra led by the DC himself.

It is being alleged that the works are sub-standard and progressing at a snail’s pace. The road widening and side drain works are not done satisfactorily and  the side drain though constructed at some places, do not have an outlet linking the main storm water drain, resulting in water stagnation.

Unscientific divider: It is said a road divider  near the Banglegudde-Acnchekatte junction has been unscientific resulting in accidents which have even claimed a few lives. The divider measuring one fourth kilometre also witnessed an accident on Thursday night when a car crashed against it.  Even street light is missing in the area despite the increasing accidents.

The Nagarottana project envisaged re-asphaltation of the road from Banglegudda to Ananthashayana Temple  from Ananthashayana to the road behind Bhuvanendra College and to lay drainage from Taluk Office to SVT Circle. The first work was initiated by Udupi District Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake. It is said  even  SFC grants  sanctioned o the same area has led to the problem.

Meanwhile, commenting on the issue Karkala TMC Chief officer Rayappa said  the TMC has taken measures to put up a warning sign board in the area which is prone to accidents.
