Develop comprehensive plan to promote tourism: C T Ravi

ravi udupi 003Udupi: Kannada and Culture and Tourism Minister C T Ravi instructed officials of various departments to come up with a comprehensive plan to promote tourism in the Udupi district as it has the potential to attract the largest number of tourists.

He was addressing the officials at a district tourism progress review meeting at the district office on Tuesday, October 1.

With a beatutiful coastline, three UNESCO-accredited World Heritage Sites, five National Parks, 30 Wildlife Sanctuaries, 15 Wildlife Sanctuaries, 40 waterfalls and many more, the minister said that the district had great potential for tourism.

He directed the authorities to put information regarding all the heritage and archaeological sites and attractions on digital sign boards, at the railway stations and bus stops so that people are informed about the tourist attractions and spread the information.

During the meeting, officials informed the minister that 281 of the 290 targets for tourist taxis had already been met. He then instructed them to put the department’s logos on vehicles and create opportunities for tourist taxis. Responding to the demand for subsidizing tourist taxis, mobile canteens and houseboats, the minister promised to study the action plan and take a decision.

The minister also guided the officials on how to encourage more domestic and foreign travellers to visit and spend more time in the district.

He then informed that Rs 16.10 crores have been sanctioned for the Udupi district and Rs 8.60 crores have been released for the development of tourism in the coastal districts.

He also proposed the creation of a team of five to six children from all schools to collect information on special practices, village births, village history, social life, food and economic arrangements in all districts.

Minister Ravi then instructed the district officers to identify at least four to five acres of land required for a well-equipped Yakshagana-focused theatre. He told the authorities to ready theatre artistes and prepare an estimate for the cost of building the theatre.

District Panchayat president Dinakar Babu, Udupi MLA Raghupathi Bhat, Kundapur MLA Haladi Srinivasa Shetty, Kaup MLA Lalaji Mendon, Deputy Commissioner G Jagadeesh, Zilla Panchayat CEO Preeti Gehlot, Additional Deputy Commissioner Sadashiva Prabhu, Udupi CMC Commissioner Anand Kallolikar and various department officials were present.
