Udupi: A special meeting was called by Dr Muddu Mohan, Deputy Commissioner to close the defective bore wells in the district on Tuesday, August 5.
Addressing the meeting, the DC informed that there are around 933 defective borewells in the district. Now closing every bore well is the responsibility of the agency, which is entrusted with the responsibility of digging it, the DC declared.
In addition the DC said that those who wanted to drill a bore well have to get a no-objection certificate (NOC) from gram panchayats.
Stating that around 95 % of the stone quarrying units are in ‘Patta land’ alone, he directed the officials of the Mines and Geology Department to submit a report on defective borewells. Moreover Panchayat development officers (PDOs) should gather information about borewells in their panchayat limits, he said.
Boards indicating quarry pits should be installed. All private quarry owners should be sent individual notices on the precautionary steps to be taken by them around the quarry pits, added the DC
Parents and teachers should also be told to convince students not to go near the stone quarry pits or any other water bodies. He also emphasized not to allow kids near the water bodies during holidays.
He added that the red ink warning messages on danger of getting into sea should be put-up on all the beaches.
