Udupi: Now the poor and the needy have a place where they can access fresh and free food as the Lions Club of Manipal, in a gesture, installed a ‘community fridge’ near Manipal Auto stand at Tiger Circle on October 27. This venture by the club was with the support of Syndicate Bank and is called ‘Santripti’, and has a motto of ‘One step towards making a hunger-free society.’
The fridge was inaugurated by PMJF Lion Dr. T Shivarama Shetty, district governor 317 C along with CMC Commissioner Anand C Kalloliker and V R Hiremath. He narrated how they received a huge amount from their international unit thanking the deputy commissioner for this plan.
He spoke on the severity of poverty and the actions needed to help people who cannot afford food.
Syndicate Bank DGM V R Hiremath informed that the fridge was contributed under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activity.
The former president of Lions Club Manipal, Sarita Santhosh was also present in the event. She said that this would be their pilot project as their mission was to provide food to the poor and that in the beginning, they would keep 10 to 20 plates of food which would increase later.
The fridge costing Rs 30,000 was sponsored by the Syndicate bank in Manipal and the maintenance of worth Rs 3000 would be handled by the autorickshaw drivers. The fridge would be kept open from 10 AM to 12:20 PM and from 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM.
Among the other dignitaries present were Mythri Chandrashekhar, Secretary; Rithu Chabriya, Treasurer; Svapnil, Svamil and Subraya K Acharya, President of autorickshaw drivers’ and owners’ association.
