Udupi: A Catholic priest and six others landed in soup on Friday, April 10, for disregarding the lockdown guidelines and restrictions against organising religious gatherings of any sort.

The incident reportedly occurred at St Antony Church, Padukone in the Nada village of the Udupi district on April 9 night (Maundy Thursday).

Reportedly, the incident was brought to the notice of the Nada gram panchayat PDO, who visited the spot.

Upon reaching the spot, the PDO found that mass was being offered by church priest Fr Fred Mascarenhas and six others, which was a clear violation of the lockdown guidelines.

He, in turn, alerted Byndoor tahsildar Basappa P Poojary and the taluk bailiff, who registered a complaint with the Gangolli police under section 144 (3) of the CrPC.

An investigation is now underway.
