Brain dead Brahmavar man’s organs harvested to save eight lives

Udupi: A brain dead youth from Brahmavar became a life saviour for as many as eight people as his family made a decision to donate his body.

Sudeep Poojary from Brahmavar had met with an accident on May 27 and was declared brain dead on May 28.Close on the heels of this declaration, Sudeep Poojary’s elder brothers, Sandeep Poojary and Pradeep Poojary expressed their willingness to donate viable organs. Accordingly, two corneas, two kidneys, Liver, Pancreas, Heart and Lungs were harvested and helped to save the lives of eight people.

As per Jeevasarthakathe (previous ZCCK) protocols and decisions, two corneas and two kidneys were retained by Kasturba Hospital Manipal for the registered patients while the liver and pancreas were sent to patients of BGS Hospital Bengaluru and Heart valve and Lungs to the patients of BGS Hospital Chennai.

Sandeep Poojary and Pradeep Poojary said that organ donation is a noble deed and their brother has committed a great deed even in death.
Medical Superintendent Dr. Avinash Shetty said, “The organ donation is a great work to save lives, and people should encourage such good things. The media should play a vital role in delivering the matter to the public” he added.

The harvested organs were transferred to Bengaluru at 7 am on 29.05.2010 with the support of the Udupi Police Department from Manipal through the Mangaluru International Airport via Green Corridor.
