Udupi: In a shocking incident at Santhekatte, activists belonging to VHP and Bajrang Dal beat up a BJP worker to death for allegedly transporting two cows in his tempo.
According to sources, BJP worker Praveen Poojary (28) along with his friend Akshay Devadiga (20) were said to be transporting two cows in Praveen’s tempo late night on Wednesday. As many as 35 activists of VHP and Bajrang Dal who received the information, held-up the tempo in front of a school at Kenjur, Santhekatte. The activists assaulted the duo with sharp weapons which killed Praveen. Akshay who was injured, was shifted to a hospital in Brahmavar.
Hebri police have taken 18 of the 35 activists into custody. A manhunt is launched to nab the rest.
It is alleged that Arvind Sherigar, a VHP member and his colleague Prakash initiated the attack.
The deceased was the president of the Kenjur local standing committee of BJP. He used to run a general store, a chicken farm and a petty shop. Meanwhile, Convenor of Mangaluru Bajrang Dal zone Sunil K R, has denied the involvement of VHP and BD activists in the incident.
Brahmavar police who were handed the case are investigating further.
