Udupi: "The Barkur heritage village in Udupi district will be declared as tourism destination in the district by the state government", said District In-charge Minister Dr. Jayamala.
In her inaugural address at the three-day 'Alupotsava 2019' celebrations at Barkur Pandya Kote, which was organised by the District Administration, Zilla Panchayat, District Tourism Department, Kannada and Culture Department, she said, "The culture and land of Karavali is extraordinary. The 'Alupa' dynasty's capital cities were Mangaluru, Udyavara and Barkur. All efforts will be made to declare Barkur as a tourism centre."
Dr. Jayamala inaugurated fest from Barkur Kote. A huge procession of various cultural tableaux started from Sri Panchalinga Temple after Jayamala kick-started the event by standing on a bullock cart.
Prior to the inauguration of the event, Dr. Jayamala inaugurated a flower exhibition. Several heritage places all over Barkur including Chalukya Pandya Kote were decorated with lights.
Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council Karnataka, Kota Srinvas Poojary appreciated the initiatives taken for the Alupotsava 2019 and requested the district administration as well as all the departments concerned to celebrate this fest every year so that the future generation can understand the culture, tradition and history of Barkur.
Sri Sri Dr. Vishwa Santhosh Bharathi Guruji, Rev Fr. Philip Nery Aranha, Parish Priest of St. Peter’s Church, Barkur, and Maulana Mohammed Rafiq spoke on the occasion.
Dinakar Babu, Zilla Panchayat (ZP) President, Shusheela K Shetty, Vice President ZP, Nalini Pradeep Rao, President of Udupi Taluk Panchayat, Sudhakar Shetty, Marmady ZP member, Shailaja D’Souza, President of Barkur Gram Panchayat, Prakash Shetty of Yadtady, Arun, member of taluk panchayat, ADC Vidyakumari, Manohar Shetty, District Karavali Tourism, Shantharam Shetty, Picthalli Srinivas and others were present on the dais.
Deputy Commissioner Priyanka Mary Francis welcomed the gathering. Anitha, Deputy Director of District Tourism department delivered the keynote address. Dr. Roshankumar Shetty of District Sports and Youth Empowerment Department proposed a vote of thanks. Ganesh Prasad from Bengaluru compered the programme.
