Udupi: District Deputy Commissioner G Jagadeesh said that he will make all attempts to help the transgender community become part of the mainstream society.
He was speaking during a meeting convened for the development of transgender minorities on Thursday, October 3, at the DC's office.
The DC said that a list would be submitted to the Department of Women and Child Development within a week, to help get opportunities for employment and self-employment for members of the transgender community.
"A list of those who require housing will be submitted to the gram panchayat. As much as 75 acres of land has been identified and another 75 acres of land is yet to be identified in the district for this purpose," he said.
He also informed that awareness programmes will be organised in all school and colleges and that all departmental authorities in the district will raise awareness about the transgender community among members of the society. A separate task force will also be set up in the police department.
While he said that he will extend all necessary assistance to the transgender community to live in mainstream society, he warned that stringent action will be taken against those of the community who needlessly disturb the citizens and vehicles.
The DC added that measures will be taken to conduct a Gender Minority Survey in the district.
Saying that the transgender community should be integrated into mainstream society, MLA Raghupathi Bhat urged the community members to visit the police department and inform them if they come across problems at the toll gates or any immoral activity in the district.
Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Preethi Gehlot, ASP Kumara Chandra, Deputy Commissioner Sadashiva Prabhu, Deputy Director of Women and Child Development Department Gracie Gonsalvis and various district level officials were also present.
