Udupi: The Anti-CAA, NRC Horata Committee, Kundapur will stage a protest on January 6 at the Shastri Circle in Kundapur at 3 pm, said Abdul Zaleel, state committee member, SDPI Karnataka.

Addressing a press conference at the Udupi Press Club here on Thursday, January 2, Abdul Zaleel said that the deaths of two people in the police firing and the lathi-charge that left several people injured, have severely damaged civil society during the protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 and National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Mangaluru.

He blamed the casualties on the police action during the protests and also accused them of being eager to commit atrocities against doctors and nurses as they allegedly broke into the ICU unit of a Mangaluru hospital and tried to break into rooms.

He then lashed out at the state government for not taking adequate action against the erring police officials.

Commenting on the state government’s decision to withdraw compensation that was offered to the police firing victims’ families, he said that the move is a disgrace and a source of shame for the state.

Shashidhar Hemmady, president of the Anti-CAA, NRC Horata Committee, Kundapur alleged that the deaths of the two people during police firing was intentional. “The Yediyurappa government has given a free hand to the police to take any decision and that is why two people died in the police firing which was targetted at the Muslim community,” he claimed.

“Home Minister Amit Shah said that this is the first phase of the NRC. He is trying to divide the country on the basis of religion. We all boycott and reject the CAA and NRC. All of us will continuously struggle against these and in this regard, we are staging a protest in Kundapur on January 6,” he added.

Sundar, district convener, DSS Ambedkar Group, Amrith Shenoy, State Vice President of Karnataka Rastra Samithi Party, Habib Ali district secretary of Congress party, K Mohammed Ashif district president of SDPI, Udupi and others were present.
