Kidnapped teenage girl dies in the hospital, tension grips Thirthahalli

Udupi: A higher secondary school girl student, who was suspected raped after being kidnapped by unidentified miscreants on October 29, died at a hospital in neighboring Manipal, police said on Saturday. Following her death, a tense atmosphere prevailed in Thirthahalli town of Shivamogga district.

The incident led to undeclared shutdown of the town on Saturday. People closed down the shops voluntarily in protest against the incident.

The 14-year-old girl, a resident of Balebail near Thirthahalli in Karnataka’s Shivamogga District, was forcibly pulled into a car and taken away when she was waiting for a bus to the school. “When she heard someone calling out her name from inside the car, she went closer. Meantime, she was forcibly pulled into the car by its unknown occupants and taken away, it’s learnt.

According to the reports, those who kidnapped the girl abandoned her about three km away at around noon the same day. Locals residing nearby spotted the girl, who was in shock and terrified. They then got the telephone number of her home from her identity card, and called her parents. The girl was admitted to a hospital at Manipal the next day after her condition worsened, it’s learnt.

It was suspected that she was raped and the post-mortem report was being awaited, police said, adding, she died on Friday.

Shivamogga SP Koushalendra Kumar and team are in search of absconding culprits. One person has been nabbed so far.
