Udupi : One person was killed and many others injured in a spate of accidents at Varamballi in Brahmavar that occurred due to an over speeding tipper truck which was driven by its cleaner under the influence of alcohol. The mishap occurred on Sunday June 29 evening.
According to sources, Manjunath Bovi from Hanagal, the cleaner of the tipper had taken the vehicle which was parked near the house of the owner of the vehicle at Katapady. A drunk Manjunath first hit a pedestrian at Kaup and another person near Uppoor Bridge near Brahmavar. In Varamballi village, the vehicle ran over a pedestrian named Duggappa (22) and killed him.
People who noticed the over speeding tipper informed the Kota police. But before the police could do anything the tipper knocked down another pedestrian named Dasa at Saligrama. Even as cops tried to stop it, the vehicle hit Gopal Pai and Shantha Pai a couple who were returning after attending a pooja at Kashi Mutt at Kota. Finally, the tipper came to an abrupt halt after climbing a road divider. The couple who were critically injured have been admitted to Manipal Hospital.
The Kota police arrested the driver cum cleaner but not before angry people thrashed him. A case has been registered.
