More than a third of babies are tapping on smartphones and tablets before they can talk, research reveals

And the study shows that by the time they are 12 months old, one in seven tots are using devices for at least an hour a day.

A study by a children’s clinic found very young children are exposed to gadgets in surprisingly large numbers.

Of children aged one and under, 36% had touched a screen and 24% had called someone.

One in eight was seen playing video games and 15% had used apps

And by two years of age, most children were using mobile devices.

Researchers developed a survey to find out when children are first exposed to mobile media and how they use devices.

Dr Hilda Kabali, of the Einstein Healthcare Network in the US, said she was ‘surprised’ by the findings.

She said: “We didn’t expect children were using the devices from the age of six months.

“Some children were on the screen for as long as 30 minutes.”

Time spent on devices increased with age, with 26 per cent of two-year-olds and 38 per cent of four-year-olds using devices for at least an hour a day.
