The Indian government has launched the process of making at least 70 supercomputers in the nation at the cost of Rs. 4500 crores, to be employed in advanced research in various fields like defense and weather predictions.

The Narendra Modi government will try to develop these supercomputers by the year 2022.

Ashutosh Sharma, Secretary of DST, said “The project, which costs around Rs. 4,500 crore is in its nascent stage. It will come up with association of the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the Department of Information and Technology (DIT). These super computers will be in different parts of country”.

Indian scientists at Centre for Development of Advanced Computing made PARAM 8000, the country’s first supercomputer, by the year 1990. India’s supercomputer dubbed Aaditya is ranked 71 in the list of top 500 supercomputers across the globe. It is also India’s best supercomputer. Aaditya is employed in climate research and has a theoretical peak of 790.7 teraflop/s.

The new supercomputers will have a theoretical peak of almost 20 petaflops/s.

Sharma further said, “We will be having these computers across the country where scientists can come and do their research. These can do calculations which your normal desktop or laptop cannot. It can help in defense simulation, computing, biology and material science and earth science”.
