In 2021, fans all around the world will be able to look forward to a truly global festival of cricket. That’s because, between October and November, 16 of the world’s best cricketing nations will descend on India for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Naturally, India will be hoping to see their own side carry off the trophy for the first time since 2007 and they surely have a very good chance.
But there are a number of so-called cricketing minnows who will be hoping to stage the sort of upset that the Netherlands brought to pass over England not just once, but twice in previous World Cups. Of course, we don’t have details of who will be meeting who yet and not all of the berths have been booked by countries, but here are three that are well capable of surprising us all on the day.

Ireland
Considering that it’s a country where more matches tend to be rained off than are ever played, Ireland has seen a remarkable run of performances in all forms of the game. Who can forget their first ever test match against England at Lords in 2019 when they skittled the opposition out for 85 or their performance in the 2009 T20 World Cup when they beat fast-emerging Bangladesh by the very wide margin of six wickets? So it would certainly come as no surprise to see them progressing to the knockout stages if the famous luck of the Irish is on their side.

Papua New Guinea
The celebrations were hard to contain when the plucky team of Papua New Guinea managed to defy the odds and qualify for the 2020 T20 World Cup at the expense of Kenya – a victory that also meant that the Netherlands had to enter the play-offs to qualify. So the experience they gain in Australia should prove invaluable in helping them to excel even more the next year. They do have previous experience on the world stage having held One Day International status until losing it in 2018, but they’re on the rise again. Maybe they’ll never again score the 572/7 they racked up against New Caledonia in a 50 over match in 2007, but they’re definitely one to watch.

Oman
These representatives from the Middle East have qualified for both the 2016 and the 2020 ICC T20 World Cups and there’s every reason to suppose that they’ll make it a hat-trick of qualifications in 2021. They could also make for a relatively long odds wager to progress to the knockout stages – and to view more cricket betting tips it will be well worth checking out the recommendations nearer the time as there will undoubtedly be some very good information and guidance to follow. Oman has played a total of 36 ODIs to date and with a win rate of over 44%, that’s not a bad record.

So here’s looking forward to a great tournament in 2020, and hopefully a famous victory for India on their home soil.
