Rio de Janeiro: Brazilian tennis player Diego Matos has been handed a life ban and fined $125,000 for match fixing.

The 31-year-old was found guilty by the Tennis Integrity Unit (TIU) of manipulating the result of 10 matches on the International Tennis Federation (ITF) circuit last year in Brazil, Sri Lanka, Ecuador Portugal and Spain, reports Xinhua news agency.

He was also ordered to repay $12,000 for illicit earnings from tournaments in Ecuador.

In addition to the match fixing charges, the TIU said that Matos refused to cooperate with investigators by denying their request to check his mobile phone and financial records.

Matos was provisionally banned from tennis last December, when he was ranked 373rd in doubles. He reached a career-high singles ranking of 580 in April 2012.
