Mumbai, Maharashtra:
Ajit Agarkar, Chairman of the BCCI Selection Committee, recently opened up about the intense and sometimes heated discussions that occur during team selection meetings. Speaking to the media, Agarkar revealed that he has had moments of sharp disagreement with former head coach Rahul Dravid, describing one instance as nearly a “bust-up.”

Agarkar explained that these disagreements are a natural part of the selection process, as each member of the committee brings a different perspective on player performance, form, and team balance. While the core of the squad often selects itself based on consistent performance and fitness, debates tend to arise over a few crucial spots, especially when multiple players are vying for limited positions.

He emphasized that despite occasional clashes, the discussions are always professional and driven by the goal of building the strongest possible team. “It’s not about ego,” Agarkar said. “It’s about ensuring that the best combination takes the field, and sometimes that leads to healthy debates.”

Agarkar also highlighted the importance of involving the team captain and head coach in the decision-making process. Their input helps align selection choices with the overall strategy and game plan, ensuring cohesion on and off the field. He added that transparency and communication among selectors, coaches, and players is key to maintaining trust and unity within the team.

The selector praised Rahul Dravid for his insights and experience, acknowledging that disagreements often led to better decisions and a more balanced team. He noted that such debates reflect the committee’s commitment to excellence rather than discord, and are essential for adapting to different formats, opposition strategies, and tournament pressures.

Agarkar concluded by reiterating that the selection process is challenging, but these disagreements ultimately strengthen the team, ensuring that India fields its most competitive lineup in every match.
