Shivamogga: A second stadium is being developed in the district near Simhadhama in Tavarekoppa, informed MP BY Raghavendra.
He said that a Special Area Game proposal was sent through the DC when KS Eshwarappa was the Sports Minister and an additional stadium was demanded.
"Minister for Sport Kiran Rijiju said that Special Area Games has ended. However, a second stadium can be developed on 30 acre under the Khelo India programme," he said adding that 30 acres land in survey number 50 will be handed to Sports Authority of India.
Athletics, football, volleyball, hockey, judo, wrestling, kabaddi and kho-kho players will be trained here.
The MP said that there were opposition to developing hockey arena in Nehru stadium. However, after inspection, it was decided that junior hocket stadium will be developed in Nehru stadium and senior hockey stadium will be developed in the new stadium.
