Shivamogga: When the entire nation is reeling under drought and water crisis, here in Shivamogga a 17-year-old boy dug a 55-ft-deep open well on his own in 45 days.

After seeing his mother carrying water from a public well about half a kilometer away from their house, this teenager decided to help his mother.

Pavan Kumar, a PU student, from Settisara village in Sagar taluk and son of Vinayak Hegde is the lad who did a bit of ‘Bahubali’ for his mother.
His father works as a cook and his mother, Nethravathi, works at a printing unit in Sagar. The family could not afford to have an open well due to poverty.

Pavan always used to see his mother struggle to fetch water for the family, making several trips to the public well. Hence, the young boy decided to find a permanent solution. He got help from a local hydrology expert named Kannappa and started digging on February 26 after the water expert identified a right location.

Due to poverty he could not hire workers too. Hence, he single-handedly started digging well. He had to stop digging for 10 days, as he had to appear for first PU exam. Soon after finishing exam he continued digging the well till April 20.

“It was really hard to dig the rocky ground under the scorching sun. Finally, at the depth of 53 ft, when water oozed out, I was filled with a sense of fulfillment. After digging two more feet, I completed the work. I am happy that my mother now has respite from having to rush to the public well after coming home from work,” The Hindu quoted Pavan.
