Shivamogga: The district administration will conduct a campaign against the use of plastics here from June 1 to June 12.
Speaking at a meeting called for discussing the arrangements for celebration of World Environment Day, Deputy Commissioner M Lokesh said, "Even though plastic bags have been banned, they are sold openly in the market. During the campaign, a large operation will be carried out against the persons still selling the carry bags. Awareness will be created not only about the plastic carry bags but also against plastic waste strewn across the roads.
Top priority is given for cleaning the stretches that lead to popular tourist destinations in the district. As part of the drive, the district administration will join hands with citizen volunteers to clean the road leading to the Jog Falls, the DC informed.
"The tourist destinations, temples, shrines, reception halls and shops in the district are defaced by the plastic waste that is dumped indiscriminately. Use of plastic bags near these spots should be completely banned", instructed the DC to his subordinates. He also called for raising awareness among the visitors to dispose the plastic waste in the special trash cans installed in these premises.
School children have been asked to collect the plastic carry bags they find at home and bring them to school on June 5 to raise awareness about the harmful effects of plastic on the environment. "The school that collects largest amount of plastic waste will be recognised with an award", he added.
