Shivamogga: Waste disposal is a huge headache for all the local governing bodies. Most of them resort to unscientific methods of disposing of waste, even after collecting garbage from door-to-door. However, Shivamogga Deputy Commissioner K A Dayananda has done something so unique that it may tackle the waste disposal issue to a large extent, provided each and every household adopts the same.
The technique called ‘Pipe Compost’ is in place in the backyard of DC’s bungalow in Shivamogga and in an exclusive interview to newskarnataka.com the DC himself explained how the entire system works.
Donning his track pants and T-Shirt, DC himself showed how the set up could be put together to reap rich dividends.
“All you need is just one foot of land and a huge pipe,” he said digging out a pit and planting the pipe inside the pit.
The DC said that already 200 to 300 houses in the city are making use of the technique, but the number of houses adopting the technique has to increase.
He said that the wet waste can be dumped straight into the pipe for about one year depending on the quantity of waste generated. Once in 15 days, a layer of either cow dung or mud or coco peat can be put in. When the pipe is full, the organic manure is ready for use.
The DC had made one such unit a couple of months ago. However, as there are about 10 to 12 people at the DC’s bungalow, the first unit was full and the DC was ready to install the second unit, the demonstration of which can be seen here.
