Malnad farmers disguise dogs as tigers to counter monkey menace

Shivamogga: The Shivamogga district’s Malnad region has been suffering from the menace of monkeys for quite awhile. However, the situation has taken a bizarre turn after local farmers recently resorted to painting dogs in order to solve this predicament. The hapless farmers have painted several of their dogs in tiger stripes with the hope that it would scare away the monkeys, according to a report by Deccan Herald.

By indiscriminately destroying the crops, monkeys have become a major threat to the nearby cultivators.

Speaking to DH, farmer Srikant Gowda said that the idea of painting his dog to resemble a tiger came to him four years ago while visiting the Uttara Kannada district. During his visit, Gowda came upon another farmer in Bhatkal who used a fake tiger doll to keep the monkeys away from his crops. Impressed by this strange tactic, Gowda found out that it actually worked when he tried it himself.

When Gowda realized that a doll was not entirely feasible, he discovered a more permanent solution and painted his dog. Gowda’s farm also features several posters of the dog as well as that of actual tigers.

Surprisingly, painting dogs to scare away rogue monkeys is not an entirely new tactic in the state of Karnataka. It can be recalled that a farmer in Udupi coloured his dog black to save his crops from being raided by monkeys.
