Shivamogga: India was chosen as the host nation for the World Environment Day celebration for 2018. The theme for this year’s World Environment Day was “Beat Plastic Pollution.” The driving motive behind this theme is to encourage people to change their lifestyle and reduce their over-reliance on single-use plastic, thereby reducing the heavy burden of plastic pollution.

On this occasion, on June 5, the Shivamogga Rotary Club, JCS, Anna Hazare Horata Samithi, Nagarika Hitarakshana Vedike,  Uttishta Bharata, Paropakaram, Shivamogga Cricket Academy and many other organisations took out a march from the Shivappa Nayak Circle to the DC’s office, passing through the B H Road, Nehru Road, Mahaveer Circle and Gopi Circle.

The organisations submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner with a few demands including the protection of lakes around Shivamogga city and the surrounding areas, making of lake bunds with walk-ways, marking lake boundaries with trees and installation of park benches for the people to relax.

They also demanded that the district administration release a white paper detailing the progress of the protection and environmental safety of the city and the area surrounding the lakes. The white paper should also contain a detailed report about the condition of the lakes and the action taken against illegal encroachments, the organisations said.

In the memorandum, there was also a demand for the authorities to survey, draw boundaries, clear encroachments and clean the lakes in the district including the Navule Lake, Purule Lake, Chennambapura lake etc.

K V Vasanth Kumar, S B Ashok Kumar, Janardhan Pai, Nagraj, Balasubramanya, Chandrayya and Mahadevswamy were present.
