Shivamogga: In a swift clearance drive, the street vendors illegally occupying the footpaths at the Gandhi Bazaar were evicted by the district officials on the morning of July 2.
It was a long time demand of the residents to clear the vendors who were not only inconveniencing the pedestrians but also blocking traffic by setting shops on the busy market road. The city police held the eviction drive after repeated complaints by residents about the menace of street vendors. The city police had warned the vendors to clear the area on Saturday, June 30.
Visiting the Gandhi Bazaar was a nightmarish affair, claimed some residents. They complained that some of the vendors were known for their unruly behaviour–badmouthing passers-by, eve teasing and even engaging in brawls with commuters.
After the eviction drive, Gandhi Bazaar was seen in a new look. The commuters heaved a sigh of relief to see clearer roads. Pedestrians too were a happy lot.
Mayor Nagaraj Kankari said that an alternate place for hawkers was available.
