Shivamogga: The excise department in Shivamogga is going high-tech. They have decided to use drones to identify the ganja (marijuana) growing fields and their producers effective from Wednesday, August 1. A demo was organized at Kunchenalli village on Thursday. The drone camera team was accompanied by a 90-member-strong team of the excise department personnel led by four officers.

Addressing the media, Excise Deputy Commissioner, Y R Mohan said, some farmers grow ganja in between their regular cash crops like corn, cotton, and in deep forest areas. “It is difficult to identify these fields of ganja. The drone camera is expected to capture these in pictures and once identified as such, raids will be conducted and the growers booked,” he said.

“If we find ganja in fields on ‘bagar hukum’ then the ownership document will be cancelled and they will be convicted under goonda act. We will carry out this drive in Shikarpura, Sagara, Sorabha and other villages in the coming days,” he stated.

He urged the locals to cooperate to make their village a drug-free zone. He requested the elected representatives, social workers and students to create awareness for the same. A resident who was listening to the excise official commented that students are spoiling their future because of this and he said he was happy the department is taking action to stop the flow of drugs.
