Doctor demands bribe for caesarean; faces jail term and fine

Shivamogga: A doctor has been convicted for taking bribe to perform caesarean section on a patient.

In September 2009, Dr. Shobana Bhojraj, who was working in Hosanagara Government Hospital had demanded Rs 2,800 as bribe from Veena Mahesh to perform caesarean section on her.

Veena had filed a complaint in the Lokayukta regarding the matter. Following her complaint, Lokayukta Police Inspector Karibasavana Gowda, who started an investigation, submitted the charge sheet to the Lokayukta court.

Upon being proven guilty, Chief and Special Judge of the District Prabhavathi M Hiremutt on December 14, sentenced the accused with 18 months of jail term, under the Prevention of Corruption Act-1988-13(2) and slapped a fine of Rs 55,000 on her.

Special Public Prosecutor B V Geetha Shivamurthy represented the Lokayukta police in the case.
