Shivamogga: The Shivamogga district unit of the Congress party staged a protest at the Deputy Commissioner’s office on Saturday, January 4, against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), 2019 and National Register of Citizens (NRC).
Addressing the protesters, veteran Congress leader Kagodu Thimmappa said, “The country did not achieve independence by playing dice games. Now, the country has lost its charm in the hand's people playing ‘dice game’.”
Former MLA Kimmane Rathnakar questioned and challenged the police department and the government by saying, “The police are not allowing us to enter our party office. Who has given them the right to question us for entering our ‘temple’? If they have the guts, let them arrest me while the Congress protests against the CAA and NRC in Thirthahalli in the coming days. Let them put me behind bars for five years. There is an emergency-like situation in the country because of the implementation of the Act.”
Attacking the BJP, he said, “The BJP is responsible for the riots in Godhra (Gujarat), Shivamogga and Thirthahalli. This is what can be expected when a party that does not have the experience of fighting in the freedom struggle comes to power. We can't expect anything more from the BJP."
The protesters also opined that the CAA and NRC will divide the country.
“The Act says that it will give citizenship to religious minorities of the neighbouring countries. Giving citizenship on a fast track basis is questionable. Such an Act should not be implemented," they said.
Later, the district Congress delegation handed a request letter over to the DC to be submitted to the President of India, asking him to revoke the CAA and NRC.
