Shivamogga: Condemning the coalition government’s policy on the farmers, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Raita Morcha had staged a protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office on Thursday, November 22.

A memorandum addressed to Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy demanding a resolution for the sugarcane farmers’ issue was handed over to the district administration.

The BJP Raita Morcha condemned the act of the government against the Belagavi sugarcane farmers. They protested against the case filed against 10 of the farmer leaders and police force using lathi charge on the farmers.

They also condemned the government for its stand on not providing support price and not finding a solution to the problem that led the farmers to march towards Suvarna Soudha in Belagavi.

They said, “The CM had assured of crop loan waiver within 24 hours of his coming into power but, ironically till date, 3000 farmers have died. Kumaraswamy is calling the farmers “goons” and asking a lady farmer where had she slept for the past four years.”

They also criticised the state government stating that it was not acting aptly in terms of providing support price to crops such as wheat, rice, sugarcane, corn etc., claiming that the Centre had provided the same.

The protestors said, “The purchase centres have not yet been opened by the state and by closing down the sugar factories, the farmers are left in the lurch.”

“Instead of paying back the farmers the support price, the government is safeguarding the factory owners who have shut down the establishments,” added protestors.

They demanded that Kumaraswamy must apologise with the lady farmer for insulting her and also waive off loans with immediate effect.

They also urged the government to dissolve the cases that were filed on the farmer leaders during the protest.

MLA Eshwarappa, MLC Ayanur Manjunath, BJP leaders S Dattatri, B S Shrinivas and others were present.
