Raichur: The barcode introduced as a first in this year’s II PU exam helped the police track a lecturer who sent pictures of the first page of the Accountancy question paper through WhatsApp on Monday even before the conclusion of the exam.

The accused, Siddangouda, a part-time lecturer at Kalinga PU College in Manvi, Raichur district, entered a classroom at SRSVS College by posing as a member of the flying squad and took a picture of the Accountancy question paper.

At 11.40 am, he sent the picture to Mahesh Kumar, principal of Kalinga College, who forwarded it to the institute’s director Sharanabasava Bettadur. Authorities were alerted by noon that pictures of the question paper were circulating on WhatsApp.

The barcode on the paper helped the authorities ascertain the examination center and with the help of the CCTV footage the police were able to solve the case within a matter of three hours. However the purpose of clicking images of the question paper when the exam was already on is not yet clear and the investigators are questioning Siddangouda to find out if he had planned to leak other papers.

The Chief Superintendent of the exam centre, Vijay Rao has been suspended and summoned for probe.

A case has been registered under section 26 of the Karnataka Education Act, and sections 120b and 72 of the IPC.
