Shivamogga: The Environment Day should be observed on a daily basis as the oxygen released by the trees is essential for human survival, said District Judge K Natarajan at Shivappa Nayaka’s Palace, Kote area after planting saplings on the occasion of World Environment Day on June 5.
The programme was jointly organised by the District Law service Board, Shivamogga district administration, Karnataka Forest Department, Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, KSRTC, Environment Study Centre, Public Education Department, Department of Archaeology, District Advocates Union, Vasavi and Mahaveera Vidyalaya and others.
India is the host of this year’s World Environment Day, with the theme of “Beat Plastic Pollution.” Overcoming the plastic menace requires concerted efforts from all stakeholders including individuals, government and the civil society not only choosing to use sustainable and environment-friendly materials but also recycling the waste plastic. This requires a change in the behaviour and practices of the people in their everyday life.
Somashekar C Badami, DFO Anthoni S, Mariyappa, Prof A S Chandrashekar, Shejeshwar R, Bhoopalam Satyanarayan, Tilakamadhusudhan and Y S Harishankar among others were present.
Man’s greed pollutes the environment
Deputy commissioner on the occasion of World Environment opined that human greed caused the environmental damage. Human behaviour and actions are disturbing the delicate balance on the Earth, he said. He also planted a sapling at the 8th KSRP premises at Machenahalli.
“The menace of plastic waste at the tourist spots is increasing day after day as people keep throwing plastics everywhere. Our behaviour needs to change to protect the natural environment. We should not only protect the greenery but also make efforts to increase it,” he said.
