Hubli: The Hubli-Dharwad police have unearthed an online cricket betting racket having connection with a national-level network and arrested two bookies.

Parashuram Shivaji Savanth, an electrician by profession and resident of New Myadar Oni in Hubli, and Krishna Govind Haibatti, a student and resident of Noolvi in Hubli taluk, are the arrested. This is the first case of online cricket betting to be traced by the police officially in the State.

Disclosing this at a press meet here on Sunday, Hubli-Dharwad Police Commissioner Ravindra Prasad said, acting on a tip-off, the suburban police raided Aditya Lodge at Kittur Chennamma Circle here from where the bookies were operating and arrested the accused on Saturday night when the Kolkota Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings were playing the final of the Champions League T20 cricket match at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore.

The police also recovered a TV, a line machine, 30 mobile phone hand sets, ATM card and a junction box from the accused.

National network

Prasad said, the arrested bookies used to connect phone calls from 40 sub-bookies through the line machine to the main bookie Kapoor in Delhi. The sub-bookies used to collect money from clients.

The bookies arrested in Hubli used to collect commission from the sub-bookies for the service they had offered. From ‘who will win the toss’ to the last ball of the match, clients used to bet on every move of the cricketers.

“The case is still in the investigation level and divulging any more information may hamper the probe. The racket’s tentacles are wide enough to reach Delhi. It seems the network is spread all over the country involving crores of rupees,” he added.
