Thirthahalli: The Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has asked the CID to probe into the Nandita murder case on Tuesday November 4.

The 14-year-old girl Nandita, a class 8 student, who allegedly consumed poison under mysterious circumstances earlier this week died at Manipal on October 31.

While the circumstances surrounding the death are still a mystery, the incident led to a voluntarily undeclared shutdown of the town on Saturday November 1 and has since created a tense situation at Thirthahalli town of Shivamogga district. When the girl’s body was brought from Manipal, thousands of people took it out in a procession for the funeral.During the procession, some miscreants threw stones at shops belonging to another community. There were heated arguments between the police and the people. To bring the situation under control, police caned the troublemakers.

It is alleged that her neighbor,  a member of another community, is somehow linked to her death, and this has aggravated the mounting communal tension in the town.

Acknowledging the situation,  district representatives have taken up the case with the CM, and he has ordered the CID to investigate further.

It has so far, not been confirmed if the 14-year-old girl was raped.  Superintendent of Police Kaushlendra Kumar said the girl had not mentioned rape in the complaint. “So, a case of rape has not been registered. Three special teams have been formed to apprehend the culprits. We have already interrogated some youth in the town but are yet to make arrests,” he said.

Earlier,  BJP activists too, resorted to protest after a rumour of abduction and rape of the girl by three members began to spread in the town, although there are several versions to the case.

Based on a complaint lodged by her father, police have registered a case of murder, sexual harassment and kidnap under the relevant sections of the IPC and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act, 2012.
