Highway accident victims to get help on the spot

Bagalkot: Karnataka will implement hi-tech emergency treatment services for accident victims on the spot with the assistance of World Health Organisation.

To begin with, the service will be made available on Belgaum-Hungund and Maddur-Mysore State Highways.

A team of special representatives from World Health Organisation, led by Dr Kumari of Sri Lanka has visited the State in connection with the implementation of the project and has held preliminary meetings with top officials various departments. A survey has been conducted at the stretches selected for the project, expected to be operational soon.

Deputy Director of Women and Child Development Department Dr Asha told Deccan Herald that the project was being implemented with the objective of providing immediate treatment to accident victims.

The project also aims to prevent accidents happening at the same place and to create awareness on road safety measures. She said that Health and Family Welfare Department, Public Works Department and the Police have been entrusted with the task of implementing the scheme.

Special treatment centres called as Trauma Care Centres will be set up at regular intervals on the roads selected for the pilot project. These centres will be provided with a team of specialists, state-of-the-art medical equipment and special ambulances.

 The team of doctors will rush to the accident spot as soon as getting the information and provide treatment to the injured. Depending on the severity of the injuries, the doctors will decide whether the victims should be submitted to the nearest taluk or district hospital by the special ambulance. The police will submit a report on the cause for the accident after which steps will be taken to prevent accident at the spot in future.

The police will accord priority to implementing safety measures on highways. The police and the Public Works Department together will instal traffic signals, barricades and road humps wherever necessary. The PWD will  also take steps to repair the road if the construction is unscientific, she added.
