Bengaluru: Newskarnataka.com and Sagarotthara Kannadigaru, a global organization of overseas Kannadigas’, have one especially important dimension in common. They are both focussed on Karnataka – its people, its development, its challenges, and possible solutions. And they both interact in different ways with the people that matter in relation to this focus.

While Newskarnataka.com does this on a 24×7 basis through its very popular news portals, www.newksarnataka.com and www.newskannada.com and more than once a week on its Web TV Channels – YouTube and Facebook, Sagarotthara Kannadigaru does this through periodic interactions with people who have the power to alter status quos and influence government policy, and also through social work initiatives.

It is when these two great champions of the Kannadiga cause combine that mountains move… figuratively speaking through virtual earthquakes all for the benefit of Kannadigas, wherever they may be!

The pandemic has perhaps, on the positive side (not C++) has made this easier as virtual meets got easier and audiences had more time to reflect on issues that otherwise would have fallen by the wayside as people pursued their daily routines.

A dialogue with former CM H D Kumaraswamy

There are blessings in disguise! One such important event when these two organizations combined was an interactive session titled “Sagarottara Kannadiarondige Sanvada’ with HD Kumaraswamy, former Chief Minister of Karnataka (twice over) as the keynote speaker.

The dialogue was held virtually on 06-09-2020. Chandrashekara Lingadalli (UAE), President of the Forum, Gopal Kulkarni (UK), Vice President, Hemegowda Madhu (Italy), Organising Secretary, Ravi Mahadeva (Saudi Arabia), Joint Secretary, Basava Patil (UK), Treasurer of Sagarottara Kannadigas coordinated the event.  Participants from more than 50 countries were present through the discussion, asking pertinent and relevant questions contributing valuable suggestions besides forming an attentive audience to the former CM who provided the governance perspective to the discussions.

The discussions revolved around questions raised by challenges and issues that a common man face:

  • Land Mafia and the land buyer’s woes,
  • Effective governance is affected by corruption and bribery,
  • Water availability issues in the Chikkaballapur Kolar area due to the delay in the Yettinahole project,
  • The increasing crimes against women,
  • Equitable investment and development in all districts especially in relation to the IT and BT sector,
  • Unemployment and the problems of the youth
  • Stagnant agricultural growth and farmers suicides,
  • And the unimpressive Education system

The former CM was forthright in his replies, accepting that things are not what they should be, but also reiterating his own efforts as CM and now in the opposition to highlight and resolve these issues. He suggested that the Government must think innovatively in all these areas and effective implementation of Government schemes is the key to change. For example in relation to Bribery and Corruption in Government services, he said people should acknowledge and protest and in relation to farmer suicides, the former CM said, “We should make their lives and livelihood easier – we should provide them with proper irrigation and technology and marketing and infrastructure. He said 25,000 crores was sanctioned for farmers for storage and other facilities. Rather than paying for their loans, we should make sure they are prevented from taking loans itself. When a farmer dies, we visit his house and give mourning money of 5 lakhs. If the same money is given before his death, we could have saved his life. The government should work on this.”

In conclusion, Kumaraswamy said, “There is a lot of development, but many are interested to invest and work, with no protection. Mangalore can develop to a great level. We need to build an army of youth with a development perspective. We should save the agricultural sector and look forward to providing them facilities. We should try to fix the loopholes and aiming to give more clarity to the problems. I have absorbed all the issues you have raised, and suggestions are given and will keep them in mind as we deal with each issue. It’s been a most rewarding experience for me”
