Demon Vs Human: Is the human in us still alive?

demon vs human

Everybody seems to ask a simple yet blood curdling question “Where is the human world heading towards?” Some heinous incidents, such as rape and murder, may have prompted the people, who might have been disturbed, because they have a human heart, to ask this question. To some this question might seem irrelevant. “Why? What’s the matter?” would be the response of such people. For them, either what is happening around doesn’t prick their conscience or they have far more important responsibility- protection of the perpetrators- to shoulder. In the bargain the demonic act devours the humanity. The voice of humanity gets choked.

When something happens for the first time, everyone would be curious and would show interest. A murder committed somewhere used to be a news which would send shivers through the spine. But now a days, murders have become so common that one would wonder whether there is any difference between human world and the slaughter house. A murderer, previously, was not accepted by the society. This would make him repent his deadly crime. But now, he comes out of the prison as a hero with the licence to commit another murder and the sketch for the next murder would be laid in the prison cell itself.

After Nirbhaya case there was a bit of consolation to the people that at least now onwards there would be fear among those who commit rape. Nirbhaya case, we thought, would make the rapists to think hundred times before indulging in such devilish crime. But Gosh! Nirbhaya case, instead of instilling fear, must have given them a new lease to rape the unarmed women. It must have sent a message that “You rape and we will see that you are safe.”

It is generally understood that rape takes place when a man cannot control his animalistic sexual urge. He finds an unarmed or a weak victim and satisfies his lust. But how can one justify the fact that one rapes a woman or a girl just because she belongs to the “other” caste. The ugliest face of this story is a reality in India at least. One rapes and murders an innocent girl just because she is from another caste, and by doing so the very existence of the people belonging to that caste or community, they think, would be threatened. Can anyone believe this!

Exactly the same happened in Rasana Village in Kathua, Jammu. An innocent girl, eight-year-old became the prey for the caste politics. She was just trying to know the world beyond her. Her wide-eyes had very many stories to narrate. But just because she belonged to the Bhakerwal nomadic Muslim community, the innocent girl was picked up by a mob, locked for days together in a temple, ironically a sacred place to all the perpetrators, and was repeatedly raped taking their turn one after the other. Though the little body tried to wriggle, her muscles supported her not and her death was postponed for hours for the last demon to satisfy his lust.

She went missing from the camp on January 10. Her father registered a missing case with the police on January 12 and her battered body was found on January 17. It was George Bernard Shaw who said once, “Politics is the last resort of the scoundrel”. In this case no one can negate this statement. The scoundrels wanted to politicise this matter. They have their rightist argument in raping the innocent girl. As Brinda Karat says in her article “No place for young girls” in Hindu dated April 13, 2018, the reasons for the rape and murder are very obvious. The Hindu activists feared the appearance of Bakherwals in Kathua that it would cause the demographic imbalance since they were scheduled tribes, belonging to Muslim community. The Bakhrewal is a nomadic community. If this community, dreaded Sangh Pariwar, deepened its roots at Rasana Village in Kathua, it would be a political setback to them. So, the plan was to abduct an innocent and rape and murder. Anyone with female organs would have been okay for them at that particular moment. Their gut feeling was rape and murder of a girl belonging to Bakherwal would shake the entire community and in turn would force them to flee from Kathua.

The demons are not the ordinary people. They are the people having saffron patronage. Three months later six men were arrested. But the horrendous fact is that when some, as individuals and forums are condemning the entire heinous crime and demanding stringent action on the perpetrators, demons are also on the move. They walked on the roads unashamed, trying to protect the criminals, demanding their release, claiming that the arrests were wrong. Hindu Ekta Manch is shouting slogans in full force that the arrested should be released immediately since they are Hindus! Brinda Karat puts it more ironically, when she writes, “the arrests are wrong because all those arrested happen to be Hindus, whereas the child victim belonged to a Muslim community.”

What a shame? Can any sane mind think of justifying the heinous act of rape and murder? Among those who came on to the roads in support of the criminals, there were ministers and lawyers who actually should have been in the forefront in mobilising the support for the cause of the victim. What a shame again to rant that the victim is well served for she is the member of “other” community? In the battle between the demons and humans, the demons’ strength might seem unmatchable, but it is temporary. The human strength can outmatch the demon. What is required is the unity and unanimity in defending the ones who fight the daunting cause. Ultimately, we will have to find solace in the words of P.B Shelly. “O Wind, If Winter Comes, Can spring be far behind?”
