Setback for Kerala NDA convenor in UAE cheque bounce case

Dubai/Thiruvananthapuram: A court in the UAE on Wednesday failed to give any relief to National Democratic Alliance’s Kerala convenor Thushar Vellapally, facing a cheque dishonour case in the Gulf monarchy.

Vellapally, who was arrested in UAE, had got bail but despite hectic parleys inside and outside for a settlement, things did not go the way he wished. The court in Ajman on Wednesday ruled that he cannot be allowed to travel out of the UAE, even if he presents a UAE national as guarantor.

The Kerala leader was hoping against hope that he would be able to return to Kerala, as in some cases, UAE courts do accept a local national as a guarantor, but it did not happen. Now, he will have to wait for the trial to complete or see the complainant withdraws the case.

The case was filed by N. Abdullah, a Keralite, with whom Vellapally had entered into a sub-contracting agreement a decade ago. The company was later wound up. Abdullah claimed Vellapally owed money to his creditors and the cheques that he gave bounced.
