Abu Dhabi: The India Social & Cultural Centre (ISC) conducted the 7th ISC-Arab Udupi Throwball Championship was held on Friday, January 25, at ISC Main Hall Rooftop from 9 AM. Top throwball teams consisting of Indian expats from all across the UAE participated in the grand tournament.
The tournament was inaugurated by vice president of the ISC, Jayaram Rai.
The main sponsors of the event, Managing Director of Arab Udupi group of hotels B S Shetty, Managing Director of TMT Group, Abu Dhabi Sajan Shetty and sports secretary of ISC, K T P Ramesh spoke on the occasion.
The matches were played on ‘league-cum-knock-out’ basis. Each participating team consisted of nine players and three substitutes as per the rules.
In the men’s category, Coastal Friends emerged victorious by beating ACME Mangalore Strikers UAE in a thrilling match. The Bunts Dubai team were placed third after beating KCO Abu Dhabi. Shawn of ACME Mangalore Strikers UAE was named ‘best smasher’, Pramod of Coastal Friends was named ‘best defender’ and Allen of Coastal Friends was named ‘best all-rounder’.
In the women’s category, Konkans Dubai came out on top after defeating ACME Mangalore Strikers UAE. Karnataka Sangh Abu Dhabi beat Coastal Friends to steal the third spot. Pramila of Konkans Dubai was named ‘best receiver’, Shuba of Konkans Dubai was named ‘best smasher’ and Reshma of ACME Mangalore Strikers UAE was named ‘best all-rounder’.
The champions of both categories won a trophy as well as a cash prize.
Earlier, Rashid and his daughter conducted warm-up exercises for the teams, following which an oath was taken by the competing teams.
The event was concluded with the singing of the UAE and Indian national anthems.
President of Abu Dhabi Karnataka Sangha, Sarvotham Shetty welcomed the gathering.
