India, UAE to operate special repatriation flights between them for 15 days

Dubai: The Indian and UAE governments have agreed to operate special flights between the two countries for 15 days to facilitate the travel of stranded Indians.

The Union Civil Aviation Ministry announced on Thursday, that the Centre has lifted its ban on UAE airlines operating flights to India and that the UAE has lifted its restrictions on Vande Bharfat flights carrying residents stranded in India.

For a period of 15 days starting July 12, the Vande Bharat Mission repatriation flights, as well as other charter UAE carrier flights, will be flying Indian expats with permits to return to the UAE on their way back from India, according to a report by the Gulf News.

On Thursday, the Ministry tweeted a statement reading, “As part of the close strategic partnership between the governments of India and the UAE and with a view to assisting UAE resident nationals who are presently in India to return to the UAE, the Civil Aviation authorities of both countries have agreed to operationalise the following from arrangement from July 12, 2020.

“a) Charter flights operated by the UAE carriers to bring Indian citizens from the UAE to India will be allowed to carry ICA-approved UAE residents (returning to the UAE from India) on their return leg (India to the UAE).

“b) Indian carriers operating repatriation flights to bring Indian citizens from the UAE to India will be allowed to carry the ICA-approved UAE residents (returning to the UAE from India) on the outward journey from India to the UAE.

“c) On the India to the UAE journey, all these flights will carry only those passengers who are destined for the UAE.

“d) This arrangement will be initially in place for a period of 15 days i.e., from July 12 to 26 after which it will be reviewed as required.”

It can be recalled that the two countries had suspended between them in view of the rising COVID 9 cases.

India currently has over 7 million confirmed COVID-19 cases of which over 21,000 are dead.
