Dubai: In a gesture of solidarity, the Vice President of UAE and the ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum took to Twitter to gather support for disaster relief in Kerala.

In a tweet written in Malayalam on Saturday, August 18, the ruler of Dubai termed the flood as the “deadliest flood of the century” and said, hundreds had died and thousands had become homeless. He further appealed to the people of the nation, “not to forget to extend a helping hand for India” as a prelude to the festival of Eid al-Adha. Along with the message were two photos of the rescue operations that are underway in India.

He posted the same message on Facebook too and further reminded the people of UAE that the people of Kerala were “part of the success story” of UAE and it was the responsibility of the people “to help and to show gratitude” to the people of Kerala. He also said that Dubai had formed a committee for emergency help to Kerala.

Soon after, thousands re-tweeted the message from the ruler and expressed their support for the initiative.

Meanwhile, President of UAE and ruler of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan sent a cable message to Indian President Ram Nath Kovind expressing his condolences for the hundreds of deaths in Kerala in the floods. He has also instructed to form a National Emergency Committee, that includes listed humanitarian organisation of UAE, under Emirates Red Cresent to help the victims of the floods. Ruler of the Emirate of Sharjah Sultan bin Muhammad Al-Qasimi also donated a sum of Rs 4 Crore for Kerala flood relief.

Hundreds of Malayalee organisations in the Gulf countries are also pitching in to collect funds for the rescue and relief. India’s Ambassador to the UAE Navdeep Singh Suri will chair a meeting tomorrow (August 19) with the expatriate organisations, activists and business leaders in the UAE to organise relief support.
