Dubai police offer motorists chance to get discount on traffic fines

UAE: As per the “fine-discount scheme” launched earlier this year, the Dubai police have halved the fines imposed on nearly 425,000 motorists after they managed to maintain a spot-free traffic record for six months according to an announcement made on Thursday, August 23.

The scheme was launched in an effort to commit drivers to ride safely and dictates that drivers who keep a clean traffic record for six months must have their pending fines reduced by 50 per cent. An additional three months of safe driving could mean an extra 25 per cent discount on the driver’s pending fines.

The police also said that out of 425,000 traffic violators, 340,112 of them were men.

Dubbed as the “traffic fines settlement”, the initiative has been instrumental in helping the police reduce the number of traffic accidents.

According to a top official, the UAE witnessed a 14 per cent drop in accidents since the scheme was introduced six months ago.

Dubai Police Assistant Commander-in-chief (Operations) Major-General Mohammed Saif Al Zafeen said, “We also saw a two per cent drop in the number of traffic fines recorded during this period as compared to last year. This drop might seem small, but assumes importance because the number of fines usually increases.”

“The police recorded 1.7 million fines in these six months,” he added.
