Bahrain, at peace signing with Israel, calls for two-state solution for Palestinians

Dubai: “A just, comprehensive and enduring two-state solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict will be the foundation, the bedrock of such peace,” said Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid al-Zayani.

The Bahraini foreign minister was speaking to hundreds of people gathered at the White House ahead of signing landmark accords normalizing Israel’s relations with the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, as part of a peace push brokered by US President Donald Trump.

“It is now incumbent on us to work urgently and actively to bring about the lasting peace and security our peoples deserve,” he added.

For the Mideast, the deals dubbed the Abraham Accords mark a distinct shift in a decades-old status quo where Arab countries have tried to maintain unity against Israel over its treatment of the stateless Palestinians.

The White House event will be the first time Arab nations have established relations with Israel since Egypt in 1979 and Jordan in 1994.

As part of the normalization agreement with the UAE, Israel agreed to suspend planned annexations in the occupied West Bank, although Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said the plans remain on the table in the long-run.
