Mysuru: World badminton champion P V Sindhu will be inaugurating the state-level Dasara sports meet at the Chamundi Vihar Stadium on October 1 at 4 pm.

On the occasion, the Dasara sports committee will present to P V Sindhu, who will be inaugurating the Yuva Dasara as well, a sum of Rs 10 lakhs.

This year, the cash prize for the winners in individual events will get Rs 8000, which is less compared to last year’s Rs 12,000.

The Karnataka Olympic Association took the initiative to conduct a state-level Dasara sports meet last year, however, this time, they will not be organising the event. The Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports and the state government, along with the Dasara sports committee, will be organising the event this year.

The organisers this year, have decided to back to hold taluk-level to divisional-level competitions to ensure that all rural sportspersons are given equal opportunities.  The sports events will be held at six different venues.

M B Jagadish, president of the Dasara Sports Committee said “Last year, there were nearly 40 events conducted as part of the Dasara sports event. This year, we will be conducting more than 52 events. The preparations for the event are going on at a brisk pace. As there were complaints from the rural sportspersons that they were not given an opportunity to take part in the sports meet due to the changes brought in through the Karnataka Olympic Association, the government has decided to conduct the event on its own. The event will be recognised and certificates will be given by the government itself.”

Dasara half marathon and cycling

The Dasara half marathon will be held on October 6. The winner of first place will get Rs 40,000. Participants are expected to arrive not only from the state but also from across the country.

A state-level cycling competition will also be held for both men and women on October 2. For men, the distance will be 100 kms and for the women it will be 50 kms. The winner of first place in the men’s and women’s categories will get a cash award of Rs 30,000. On October 2 and 3, the Dasara body building competition will be held at the Chamundi Vihar Stadium. The cash prize for Dasara Shree will be Rs 15,000.

Precautionary measures

As a precautionary measure, K R Hospital, Columbia Asia Hospital and JSS hospital have come forward to provide medical assistance to the participants. Six ambulances will also be pressed into service on these days.
