Mysuru: On Thursday, April 18, 14 of Karnataka’s Lok Sabha constituencies went to polls, with Mandya registering the highest voter turnout in the state. Mysuru, on the other hand, witnessed a slight increase in voter turnout compared to the 2014 elections, registering a percentage of 69.25 (67.30 in 2014), coming in the 10th position out of the 14 constituencies that went to polls.

Among the eight constituencies, Periyapatna recorded a voting percentage of 78.86, the highest in the Mysuru Lok Sabha constituency. The Chamaraja constituency, on the other hand, recorded a percentage of a mere 59.93, which is the lowest.

While Mysuru recorded a disappointingly slight increase in the overall voting percentage, all hope is not lost. Of the 18,94,372 people who showed up to vote in the Lok Sabha elections on Thursday, women came out in numbers larger than that of the men, registering a total of 9,49,702. The men, however, were not too far behind, registering a total number of 9,44,577.

Of the eight constituencies that come under the Mysuru Lok Sabha constituency, the women turned up to vote in huge numbers in five- Madikeri, Virajpet, Krishnaraja, Chamaraja and Narasimharaja. In Madikeri, Virajpet, Krishnaraja and Chamaraja the number of women voters were 1,11,853, 1,09,985, 1,23,532 and 1,16,929 respectively.

In Periyapatna, Hunsur and Chamundeshwari, however, the number of men was more than that of the women. In the Chamundeshwari constituency, represented by senior JDS leader and district in-charge minister G T Devegowda, of the total valid votes of 3,02782, 1,52727 were men.

Voting percentage of each Assembly segment of the Mysuru Lok Sabha constituency- 78.86 per cent in Periyapatna, 77.24 per cent in Hunsur, 76.55 per cent in Madikeri, 72.52 per cent in Virajpet, 71.68 per cent in Chamundeshwari, 60.60 per cent in Narasimharaja, 60.29 per cent in Krishnaraja and 59.93 per cent in Chamaraja.
