‘West needs to learn from India on being socially responsible’

Mysuru: Western world has to learn from India on how to be socially responsible, said Ulrich Hommel, Director, Business Schools Development, EFMD Global Network.

Delivering keynote address during one-day symposium on ‘Corporate Social Responsibility and Community Development’ organised by Shri DharmasthalaManjunatheshwara Institute for Management Development (SDMIMD) in association with European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD) based at Belgium and Third Sector Research Resource Centre, University of Mysore, Mysuru, at SDMIMD premise, here on Tuesday, he expressed concern that business education is becoming commercial as days passed by and emphasised on the need for business institutions to be more responsible towards society.

“Corporate Social Responsibility should be embedded in the business eco-system. Ethics, responsibility and sustainability must be underpinned. Educational institutes may now focus on developing strategies to get the maximum benefits to the society from the nexus between ethics, responsibility and sustainability”, said Prof.Ulrich, calling upon academics towards responsible research in business and management.

Earlier, speaking after inaugurating the event Hemantha Kumar, Vice Chancellor, University of Mysore that CSR must reach needy and deserving. “Most of the needy people are unaware of the fact that they can be supported by the corporate sector. Hence, we have to identify where the need is and thereby bridge the gap,” he said.

N.R.Parasuraman, Director, SDMIMD Mysore, shed light on CSR and elucidated on its importance in shaping the business world. He talked about Dharmasthala as an institution which is designed by values, ethics and strong principles. B Muthuraman, former Vice Chairman, Tata Steel Ltd, Dr Prof. M. Indira, Chairperson, Department of Economics, University of Mysore, Dr.B.Venkatraja, Chairperson of the Symposium were also present.
